NKR is the only English-language journal in the world that focuses on North Korea. Ron Selter’s Ballparks of the Deadball Era won the 2009 Larry Ritter Award, given annually for the best book on a deadball-era (1900-1920) topic. Rick Huhn’s Eddie Collins (second) and Michael Lynch’s Harry Frazee, Ban Johnson and the Feud That Nearly Destroyed the American League, (fourth) were also among the top vote-getters. (Oct 31, 05) The oldest living member of the Hall of Fame, Al Lopez, passed away this weekend in Tampa at the age of 97. Much more than a catcher and manager, he opened up baseball to individuals of Spanish, Cuban and Italian ancestry at a time when social barriers had just begun to recede. Wes Singletary, a Tampa native now living in Tallahassee, wrote Lopez's biography in 1999. The book is based, first, on the recollections of the man himself, and former players, family, and fans, and also on newspaper and periodical accounts, and archival resources.
